THE SONG CYCLE
The Song Cycle
A veteran rocker sets out to cycle from his home in Ireland to the Glastonbury Festival, risking life, limb and dignity in a story about Mother Nature, Father Time and Brothers on the Road.
In 2022, Nick decides to cycle from his home in Dublin to the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England, carrying his guitar, tent, and all other necessities on his bicycle while playing shows in towns along the way.
He is accompanied by his great friend and musical partner, Sean Millar, who tracks his progress using public transport, joins him onstage every night, and acts as a witty, long-suffering, and sometimes skeptical Sancho Panza to his Don Quixote.
On the day they finally play Glastonbury, Nick turns 60, thereby outliving his politician father, John Kelly, who died at age 59 and was unaware of the existence of Glastonbury, much less contemplated attending it.
While inspired by environmental concerns, The Song Cycle turns out to be about other forms of sustainability too. Ultimately it encourages viewers to stay in the saddle and keep pedaling, whatever the weather, traffic, or gradient faced.
The Song Cycle will be showing in selected cinemas around Ireland in May and June. This series of screenings kicks off at Dublin’s IFI on Friday May 1st, with myself and my intrepid fellow-traveller Sean Millar swinging by to answer questions and play tunes – tickets now on sale from the IFI Dublin. More dates are listed below.

Kickstarter Campaign
On October 1st 2023, I launched a Kickstarter campaign.
The aim of the campaign was to raise funds to complete The Song Cycle documentary film. As I cycled from Dublin to the Glastonbury Festival & played DOGS gigs along the way, I filmed my journey – and this funding has helped to turn that footage into a finished movie with the title “The Song Cycle”.
The funding from this campaign has covered the initial post production costs such as picture & sound editing.
This campaign was a great success & we successfully reached our target of €25,000.
